A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
