Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
